The Science of Coalescing Filtration
Coalescing filtration is the primary mechanism used to remove liquid aerosols, such as oil and water, from compressed air streams. Unlike standard particulate filters that trap solid dust on the surface, coalescing filter elements utilize a multi-layered matrix of borosilicate glass microfibers. As the air passes from the inside of the element to the outside, three distinct physical phenomena occur:
- Direct Impact: Larger liquid particles collide directly with the microfibers and get trapped.
- Inertial Impaction: Mid-sized particles, unable to follow the rapid twists of the airflow, cross the streamlines and strike the fibers.
- Brownian Diffusion: Sub-micron particles move in a random, erratic pattern due to molecular collision, causing them to eventually intercept the filter media.
Once captured, these microscopic droplets merge (coalesce) into larger drops. Gravity then forces the liquid to flow down to the bottom of the filter element, where it collects in the quiet zone of the housing and is safely discharged via automatic drain valves. This process delivers an incredible 99.99% efficiency down to 0.01 microns.

Complete Multi-Stage Filtration Strategy
Achieving ultra-pure air cannot be accomplished with a single filter. It requires a carefully planned multi-stage approach to balance air purity and element lifespan:
